{"id":659,"date":"2019-11-30T02:23:36","date_gmt":"2019-11-29T15:53:36","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.thescottclan.org\/jason\/?p=659"},"modified":"2020-05-03T19:40:05","modified_gmt":"2020-05-03T10:10:05","slug":"elf-and-its-place-in-vfx-history","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thescottclan.org\/jason\/2019\/11\/30\/elf-and-its-place-in-vfx-history\/","title":{"rendered":"Elf and its Place in VFX History"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>My kids got to watch <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0319343\/\">Elf<\/a><\/em> for the first time tonight (since there&#8217;s no Thanksgiving in Australia\u2014U.S. or Canadian\u2014we started celebrating Christmas right after Halloween\u2026).  I&#8217;ve loved that movie ever since it came out, and it&#8217;s been a staple of my wife&#8217;s and my Christmas-movie watching every year.  But every year I&#8217;m also reminded on how influential <em>Elf<\/em> is to our modern VFX history\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<p>Here are a few reasons why I add <em>Elf<\/em> to my list of movies in a VFX-history retrospective:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>It&#8217;s Jon Favreau&#8217;s first movie with special effects (ranging from forced-perspective to stop-motion to digital).  He then went on to direct <em>Zathura<\/em> (which I helped a little with while I was at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.stanwinstonschool.com\/\">Stan Winston Digital<\/a>), and then on to <em>Iron Man<\/em>\u2026and I guess you know the rest.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"640\" height=\"723\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thescottclan.org\/jason\/wp-content\/uploads\/Elf-Forced_Perspective-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-661\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.thescottclan.org\/jason\/wp-content\/uploads\/Elf-Forced_Perspective-1.jpg 640w, https:\/\/www.thescottclan.org\/jason\/wp-content\/uploads\/Elf-Forced_Perspective-1-266x300.jpg 266w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><figcaption>Bob Newhart looking elf-sized<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>It&#8217;s one of the last major movies to make heavy use of forced perspective (it was released the same year as <em>The Lord of the Rings: Return of the King<\/em>).<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"700\" height=\"380\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thescottclan.org\/jason\/wp-content\/uploads\/Elf-Rankin-Bass.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-662\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.thescottclan.org\/jason\/wp-content\/uploads\/Elf-Rankin-Bass.jpg 700w, https:\/\/www.thescottclan.org\/jason\/wp-content\/uploads\/Elf-Rankin-Bass-300x163.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><figcaption>Buddy and Leon the Snowman (voiced by Leon Redbone)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Favreau made the film an homage to Rankin\/Bass Christmas animations of the 1960s. <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>It&#8217;s Ray Harryhausen&#8217;s penultimate performance, as the voice of the stop-motion polar bear cub.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>One of its main VFX vendors was <a href=\"https:\/\/rhythm.com\/\">Rhythm &amp; Hues Studios<\/a> (about 4 years before I got there), supervised by future Oscar-winner <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/name\/nm0922543\/\">Bill Westenhofer<\/a> and animation supervised by another future Academy Award-winner, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/name\/nm0207487\/\">Erik De Boer<\/a> (and work by just plenty of ol&#8217; friends of mine).  Their work included the CG sleigh, reindeer, and digi-doubles.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>The movie also makes good use of VFX for snow sequences (done by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.digitaldimension.com\/\">Digital Dimension<\/a>), matte paintings, wire removal, and the usual bevy of invisible FX work.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p>So, in my mind, <em>Elf<\/em> exists as a nice addition to any FX history timeline, but no matter what, it first and foremost exists as just a great movie.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p>Oh\u2026and I can&#8217;t go without saying that Will Ferrell is  a proud USC Trojan!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-youtube wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<div class=\"olsen-responsive-embed\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Will Ferrell | USC Commencement Speech 2017\" width=\"665\" height=\"374\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/mfjGmBVAL-o?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n<h3>Related Images:<\/h3>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>My kids got to watch Elf for the first time tonight (since there&#8217;s no Thanksgiving in Australia\u2014U.S. or Canadian\u2014we started celebrating Christmas right after Halloween\u2026).
